Black Rangers

1772 · 18th century · Also known as Redi Musu

The Black Rangers were a corps of formerly enslaved men raised by the colony of Suriname in 1772 to fight maroon groups, especially those led by Boni, in return for their freedom. Known from their red caps as the Redi Musu, they knew the forest well and proved more effective than European troops, serving alongside the Dutch soldiers described by John Gabriel Stedman.
