Book of Common Prayer

1549 · 16th century

The Book of Common Prayer is the prayer book of the Church of England, first issued in 1549 under Edward VI and largely composed by Archbishop Thomas Cranmer. It replaced the Latin services with a single English liturgy, revised in 1552, 1559 and 1662. The 1662 version remained the official liturgy for centuries, and its language and forms spread throughout the Anglican Communion.
