BRICS is an intergovernmental grouping of major emerging economies named after its first members, Brazil, Russia, India and China, which held their first summit in 2009; South Africa joined in 2010–2011. It expanded from January 2024 to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates, and Indonesia in 2025, and has founded a New Development Bank. It seeks greater influence for its members in a world economy shaped by Western institutions.
