Buton Island

Also known as Butung

Buton is an island off the south-eastern peninsula of Sulawesi, Indonesia, in the province of Southeast Sulawesi. Its main town, Baubau, was the seat of the Sultanate of Buton, which adopted Islam in the 16th century and controlled sea routes between Makassar and the Moluccas. The island is known for its asphalt deposits and for the great fortress of Wolio.
