Battle of Ulan Butung

1690 · 17th century · Part of the Dzungar–Qing Wars

The Battle of Ulan Butung was fought in September 1690 a few hundred kilometres north of Beijing, between the Dzungar ruler Galdan Boshugtu Khan and a Qing army led by Prince Fuquan, the Kangxi Emperor's half-brother. Galdan's troops fought behind a line of kneeling camels covered with felt, and the battle was indecisive, but Galdan withdrew to Mongolia with heavy losses. The Qing went on to defeat him at Jao Modo in 1696.
