Byzantine–Seljuk wars
The Byzantine–Seljuk wars were the conflicts between the Byzantine Empire and the Seljuk Turks, from Seljuk raids into Armenia in the mid-11th century to the end of the Sultanate of Rum. The Byzantine defeat at Manzikert in 1071 opened Anatolia to Turkish settlement, and Byzantine appeals for help led to the First Crusade. The Komnenian emperors recovered western Anatolia, but the defeat at Myriokephalon in 1176 ended hopes of retaking the interior.
