Caerphilly Castle

1268 · 13th century

Caerphilly Castle, north of Cardiff in south Wales, is a vast concentric castle begun in 1268 by Gilbert de Clare, Earl of Gloucester and lord of Glamorgan, to block the advance of Llywelyn ap Gruffudd. Surrounded by artificial lakes, it is the largest castle in Wales and one of the largest in Britain. It later passed to the Despensers.
