Iestyn ap Gwrgant

11th century · 11th century

Iestyn ap Gwrgant was the last native king of Morgannwg, or Glamorgan, in south-east Wales in the late 11th century. Around 1090 he was overthrown by the Norman Robert Fitzhamon, who built a castle at Cardiff and created the marcher Lordship of Glamorgan. Later Welsh tradition blamed Iestyn for inviting the Normans in, and several Glamorgan families claimed descent from him.
