Laws in Wales Acts 1535 and 1542

1535–1542 · 16th century

The Laws in Wales Acts were statutes of Henry VIII that annexed Wales to the Kingdom of England. They abolished the marcher lordships, created new shires such as Glamorgan, Brecknockshire and Pembrokeshire, gave Wales seats in Parliament and applied English law. They also required officials to use English, excluding Welsh speakers from public office.
