Callicratidas

d. 406 BCE · 5th century BCE

Callicratidas was a Spartan navarch, or fleet commander, in the Peloponnesian War, who rose to prominence although he belonged to the non-citizen mothax class. In 406 BCE he was sent to the Aegean to take over the Spartan fleet from Lysander, who had apparently returned the money meant to pay it to the Persian prince Cyrus. As a traditionalist Spartan he was loath to ask a Persian for funds, and the city of Miletus eventually paid instead. After a first victory over the Athenian admiral Conon at Mytilene, he was defeated and killed at the Battle of Arginusae in 406 BCE. He opposed alliance with Persia and said he would seek peace with Athens, and was well regarded after his death.
