Cantarell Field

1976 · 20th century

The Cantarell Field is a supergiant offshore oil field in the Bay of Campeche, off the coast of Mexico. Named after the fisherman Rudesindo Cantarell, who reported an oil seep in the area, it began production in 1979 and peaked in 2004 as one of the most productive fields in the world. Its output financed the Mexican oil boom of the late 1970s and later declined steeply.
