Cantar de mio Cid

c. 1200 · 13th century · Also known as Poema de mio Cid, Poem of the Cid

The Cantar de mio Cid (Poem of the Cid) is the oldest surviving epic poem in Castilian Spanish, telling of the exile and triumphs of Rodrigo Díaz, El Cid. Composed around 1200, it survives in a single 14th-century manuscript copied from a text signed by a certain Per Abbat. It recounts the Cid's conquest of Valencia and the restoration of his honour, and is a founding work of Spanish literature.
