Caracazo

1989 · 20th century

The Caracazo was a wave of protests, rioting and looting that began on 27 February 1989 in Guarenas and Caracas, Venezuela, after President Carlos Andrés Pérez's austerity programme raised fuel prices and public transport fares. The army suppressed it with great force, killing hundreds of people by official counts and possibly many more, and it undermined the legitimacy of the Punto Fijo political system.
