Carlist Wars
The Carlist Wars were civil wars fought in Spain in the 19th century between supporters of Isabella II and her successors and the Carlists, who backed the claims of her uncle Carlos and his descendants to the throne. The main wars were fought in 1833–1840 and 1872–1876, with a smaller one in 1846–1849. The Carlists, strongest in Navarre, the Basque Country and Catalonia, stood for absolutism, Catholicism and regional rights.
