Isabella II of Spain

1830–1904 · 19th century

Isabella II of Spain became queen as an infant in 1833, and her succession set off the Carlist Wars. Her reign was marked by political instability, military coups and scandal at court. The Glorious Revolution of September 1868 drove her into exile, and in 1874 her son was proclaimed king as Alfonso XII, beginning the Restoration.
