1903–1977 · 20th century

Carlos Prío Socarrás was a Cuban politician of the Auténtico Party who was elected president in 1948. His government created the National Bank of Cuba but was widely seen as corrupt and plagued by political gang violence. He was overthrown by Fulgencio Batista's coup of 10 March 1952, shortly before new elections, and later backed the opposition from exile.
