Attack on the Moncada Barracks

1953 · 20th century · Part of the Cuban Revolution

The attack on the Moncada Barracks was an assault on an army post in Santiago de Cuba on 26 July 1953 by about 160 rebels led by Fidel Castro. It failed, and many captured rebels were killed; Castro was tried, gave his speech 'History Will Absolve Me' and was imprisoned until an amnesty in 1955. The date gave its name to his 26th of July Movement.
