Sierra Maestra
The Sierra Maestra is the highest mountain range of Cuba, in the south-east of the island, rising to Pico Turquino at about 1,970 metres. Its rugged forests sheltered rebels in the wars of independence and, from December 1956, Fidel Castro's guerrillas, who built there the army that overthrew Fulgencio Batista in 1959. Much of it is now protected as a national park.
