Carlos Salinas de Gortari

b. 1948 · 20th century

Carlos Salinas de Gortari was president of Mexico from 1988 to 1994 for the Institutional Revolutionary Party, after an election widely accused of fraud. He privatised state companies, reformed the land-tenure provisions of the constitution and negotiated the North American Free Trade Agreement. His last year brought the Zapatista uprising and the murder of Luis Donaldo Colosio, and the peso crisis followed weeks after he left office.
