Chakradhar Singh

1905–1947 · 20th century

Chakradhar Singh was the Raja of Raigarh, a princely state in what is now Chhattisgarh, India, from 1924. A musician and dancer himself, he gathered leading Kathak dancers, singers and instrumentalists at his court and compiled treatises on dance and rhythm, giving rise to the Raigarh gharana of Kathak. The annual Chakradhar Samaroh festival of music and dance in Raigarh commemorates him.
