Raigarh State

1625 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Raigarh

A Gond-ruled state of eastern Chhattisgarh whose music-loving ruler made it a centre of Kathak dance.

Origins

Raigarh was ruled by a Raj Gond dynasty whose traditions say they came from Chanda (Chandrapur). The register dates the state to around 1625. It was later a dependency of the Bhonsles of Nagpur before passing under British paramountcy.

Rule and society

The Rajas ruled a territory of rice fields and forests along the Mand river. Raja Chakradhar Singh, who reigned from 1924, gathered leading musicians and dancers at his court and wrote treatises on dance, giving rise to the Raigarh gharana of Kathak.

Decline and legacy

Raigarh merged into the Central Provinces and Berar in 1948, later Madhya Pradesh. Since 2000 it has been in Chhattisgarh, where the annual Chakradhar Samaroh festival of music recalls its court.
