Champoeg

Champoeg was a settlement on the Willamette River in present-day Oregon, United States, where settlers met on 2 May 1843 and voted narrowly to form a provisional government, by tradition 52 votes to 50. It was the first American-style government on the Pacific coast. The town was destroyed by a flood in 1861, and the site is now a state heritage area.
