Champawat

Champawat is a town in eastern Uttarakhand, India, in the Kumaon hills near the border with Nepal. Tradition holds that it was the first seat of the Chand dynasty of Kumaon, founded by Som Chand, before the capital moved to Almora in the 16th century. It is known for the carved stone Baleshwar temple complex and is the headquarters of Champawat district.
