Chand dynasty

The Chand dynasty ruled the hill kingdom of Kumaon, in modern Uttarakhand, India, until the Gorkha conquest of 1790. Tradition traces it to Som Chand, a Rajput prince from the plains who settled at Champawat, though its early chronology is legendary. By the 15th and 16th centuries the Chands had subdued rival hill chiefs, and Kalyan Chand moved the capital to Almora around 1563.
