Chaonia
Chaonia was the north-western region of ancient Epirus, on the Ionian coast in present-day southern Albania, home of the Chaonians, one of the three main Epirote peoples. Its chief town was Phoenice, and Butrint lay within it. The Chaonians were at first governed by an aristocracy rather than kings, and later joined the Epirote state and the league that followed the monarchy.
