Charilaos Trikoupis

1832–1896 · 19th century

Charilaos Trikoupis was a Greek statesman who served as Prime Minister seven times between 1875 and 1895. In 1875 he established the principle that the king must appoint governments with the confidence of parliament. His governments modernised the country with roads, railways, the Corinth Canal and a reformed army, financed by foreign loans, but the debt led to state bankruptcy in 1893.
