Charles Darwin

1809–1882 · 19th century

Charles Darwin was an English naturalist whose theory of evolution by natural selection transformed biology. As naturalist on the survey voyage of HMS Beagle from 1831 to 1836, he visited the Galápagos Islands in 1835, where the variation of finches, mockingbirds and tortoises between islands later shaped his ideas. He set them out in On the Origin of Species in 1859.
