Juan Montalvo

1832–1889 · 19th century

Juan Montalvo was an Ecuadorian essayist and liberal polemicist, the fiercest critic of the Catholic conservative regime of Gabriel García Moreno and later of the dictator Ignacio de Veintemilla. After García Moreno's assassination in 1875 he reportedly declared 'my pen killed him'. His works, including the Seven Treatises and the Catilinarias, are classics of Spanish-American prose; he died in exile in Paris.
