Charles Stoddart

1806–1842 · 19th century

Charles Stoddart was a British army officer sent to Bukhara in 1838 to reassure Emir Nasrullah about British aims in Afghanistan and to seek the release of Russian captives. Accused of slighting the emir, he was thrown into a vermin-infested pit and held for years. After Arthur Conolly arrived to secure his release, both were beheaded before the Ark citadel in June 1842.
