Charles Stewart Parnell

1846–1891 · 19th century

Charles Stewart Parnell was an Irish nationalist politician who led the Irish Parliamentary Party from 1880. A Protestant landowner, he combined parliamentary obstruction with the agitation of the Land League and persuaded Gladstone to adopt Home Rule in 1886, but his career collapsed in 1890 when his relationship with Katharine O'Shea was exposed in a divorce case.
