Irish War of Independence

1919–1921 · 20th century · Also known as Anglo-Irish War

The Irish War of Independence was a guerrilla war fought by the Irish Republican Army against British forces in Ireland. It followed Sinn Féin's election victory and the declaration of independence by Dáil Éireann in 1919. A truce in July 1921 led to the Anglo-Irish Treaty, which created the Irish Free State.
