Easter Rising

1916 · 20th century · Also known as Easter Rebellion

The Easter Rising was an armed insurrection in Dublin in April 1916, launched by Irish republicans of the Irish Volunteers and the Irish Citizen Army to end British rule. Patrick Pearse proclaimed an Irish Republic from the General Post Office, but the rebels surrendered after six days of fighting. The execution of its leaders turned public opinion towards Sinn Féin and helped lead to the Irish War of Independence.
