Irish Republic

1919 CE – 1922 CE · capital Dublin

The revolutionary republic declared in 1916 and established by Dail Eireann in 1919, which fought the War of Independence against British rule.

Origins

The Easter Rising of 1916 proclaimed an Irish Republic. After Sinn Fein won most Irish seats in the 1918 general election, its members met in Dublin on 21 January 1919 as Dail Eireann, adopted a Declaration of Independence and created a government, with Eamon de Valera as president from April 1919.

Rule and society

The republic built a counter-state: Dail courts, a loan raised by Michael Collins, local councils and the Irish Republican Army, which fought the War of Independence against British forces from 1919 to 1921. It was recognised by no foreign government.

Decline and legacy

After the truce of July 1921, the Anglo-Irish Treaty, approved by the Dail in January 1922, replaced the republic with the Irish Free State, a dominion. The split over the Treaty led to the Irish Civil War.
