Chen Sheng

d. 208 BCE · 3rd century BCE

Chen Sheng was a conscript leader who began the first great rising against the Qin dynasty in 209 BCE. Delayed by rain and facing execution, he and Wu Guang rebelled at Dazexiang, took the city of Chen and proclaimed the state of Zhangchu, reviving the name of Chu. His commanders spread the revolt across the former states, some making themselves kings, as Wu Chen did in Zhao, before Chen was killed by his own driver in 208 BCE.
