Choe Chiwon

b. 857 · 9th century · Also known as Ch'oe Ch'i-won

Choe Chiwon was a scholar and poet of late Silla. Sent to Tang China as a boy, he passed the Tang civil service examination and served there, writing a famous proclamation against the rebel Huang Chao. He returned to Silla in 885 but, frustrated by the rigid bone-rank system and the kingdom's decline, withdrew to the mountains. He is honoured as a founder of Korean literature in Chinese.
