Gung Ye

d. 918 · 10th century

Gung Ye was a warlord of Korea's Later Three Kingdoms period, said to be an outcast Silla prince who lost an eye as an infant and became a Buddhist monk. He rose as a rebel commander and in 901 proclaimed a kingdom, later called Majin and then Taebong, ruling from Cheorwon. Claiming to be the Maitreya Buddha, he grew increasingly tyrannical and was overthrown in 918 by his generals, who made Wang Geon king of Goryeo.
