Chorni Klobuky
The Chorni Klobuky, 'Black Hats', were a union of Turkic nomad groups, including Torks, Berendei and Pechenegs, settled by the princes of Kiev along the Ros River south of the city in the 11th and 12th centuries. In return for land they served as frontier cavalry against the Cumans and took part in the princes' wars. They disappeared as a distinct group after the Mongol invasion of 1240.
