Civic United Front

1992 · 20th century · Also known as CUF

The Civic United Front is a Tanzanian political party founded in 1992, strongest in Zanzibar and above all on Pemba. Its long rivalry with Chama Cha Mapinduzi produced disputed elections on the islands in 1995, 2000 and 2005 and the killing of opposition protesters in January 2001. A government of national unity with CCM was formed in Zanzibar in 2010, and many of its members later joined ACT-Wazalendo.
