Claude Lorrain

c. 1600–1682 · 17th century · Also known as Claude Gellée

Claude Lorrain, born Claude Gellée at Chamagne in the Duchy of Lorraine, was a landscape painter who spent nearly all his career in Rome. His idealised views of the Roman countryside and of harbours bathed in golden light became the model of the classical landscape. They strongly influenced painters and garden designers, especially in Britain, into the nineteenth century.
