Code of Hammurabi

c. 1754 BCE · 18th century BCE · Also known as Hammurabi's famous Code

The Code of Hammurabi is a Babylonian law code issued around 1754 BCE by Hammurabi, king of the Babylonian Empire, inscribed on a basalt stele. It contains nearly 300 laws on commerce, property, family and crime, including the principle of proportional punishment. The stele was carried off to Susa by the Elamites and rediscovered there, and it is now in the Louvre.
