Ur
Ur was an ancient Sumerian city in southern Mesopotamia, near the former course of the Euphrates in present-day Iraq. It reached its height as the capital of the Third Dynasty of Ur, or Neo-Sumerian Empire, under Ur-Nammu and his successors, who built its great ziggurat. Its sack by the Elamites around 2004 BCE ended Ur III, and the city remained a religious centre in later Babylonian times.
