Uqba ibn Nafi
Uqba ibn Nafi was an Arab general of the Rashidun and Umayyad caliphates who led the conquest of North Africa. He founded Kairouan in Ifriqiya around 670 as a base for campaigns against the Berbers and Byzantines, and in a later expedition reportedly reached the Atlantic coast. Returning eastwards, he was ambushed and killed near Biskra in 682 or 683 by the Berber leader Kusaila; his tomb lies at Sidi Okba in Algeria.
