Biskra
Biskra is an oasis city in north-eastern Algeria, on the southern edge of the Aurès Mountains at the gateway to the Sahara. Known in Roman times as Vescera, it lay on routes between the Mediterranean coast and the desert. Near it, in 682 or 683, the Berber leader Kusaila ambushed and killed the Arab commander Uqba ibn Nafi, a setback for the early Muslim conquest of North Africa.
