Battle of Vescera

682 · 7th century · Also known as Battle of Tahuda · Part of the Muslim conquest of the Maghreb

The Battle of Vescera was fought near Biskra in present-day Algeria in 682 or 683, when Berber forces under Kusaila, with Byzantine support, ambushed the Arab commander Uqba ibn Nafi as he returned from a campaign that had reached the Atlantic. Uqba and most of his escort were killed at Tahuda. The defeat let Kusaila take Kairouan and delayed the Muslim conquest of the Maghreb for several years.
