Kusaila

d. c. 688 · 7th century · Also known as Kasila, Aksil

Kusaila was a Christian Berber chief of the Awraba confederation who led resistance to the Arab conquest of North Africa in the 680s. Won over and converted by Abu al-Muhajir Dinar, he was later humiliated by Uqba ibn Nafi, whom he ambushed and killed near Biskra in 682 or 683. He then held Kairouan and ruled Ifriqiya until he fell in battle against Zuhayr ibn Qays in the late 680s.
