Codex Manesse

c. 1300–1340 · 14th century

The Codex Manesse is an illuminated songbook compiled in Zürich between about 1300 and 1340, probably for the Manesse family of patricians. It is the most comprehensive surviving collection of Middle High German love poetry, with about 6,000 stanzas by 140 poets, and its 137 full-page miniatures show the poets as knights and princes. It is kept in Heidelberg University Library.
