1628–1684 · 17th century

Cornelis Speelman was a Dutch East India Company commander and governor-general of the Dutch East Indies from 1681 to 1684. Allied with Arung Palakka of Bone, he defeated Sultan Hasanuddin of Gowa and imposed the Treaty of Bongaya of 1667, which ended Makassar's power and its free trade. He later campaigned in Java against Trunajaya's rebellion on behalf of the Mataram court.
