Corpus Evangelicorum

1653–1806 · 17th century

The Corpus Evangelicorum was the body of the Protestant estates at the Imperial Diet of the Holy Roman Empire, formally constituted in 1653 under the Peace of Westphalia, which allowed religious questions to be settled by agreement between the Protestant and Catholic bodies rather than by majority vote. Its directorship stayed with the Electorate of Saxony even after Augustus the Strong became a Catholic in 1697. It lasted until the end of the Empire in 1806.
