Council of Preslav

893 · 9th century

The Council of Preslav was an assembly of Bulgarian nobles and clergy held at Preslav in 893. Summoned by the former ruler Boris I, it confirmed the deposition of his son Vladimir-Rasate, who had tried to restore paganism, and placed his younger son Simeon I on the throne. It is traditionally said also to have made Slavonic the language of church and state and moved the capital from Pliska to Preslav.
