Preslav
Preslav was the capital of the First Bulgarian Empire from 893 to 972, near modern Veliki Preslav in north-eastern Bulgaria. Under Tsar Simeon I it became a centre of Slavonic literature, where the Preslav Literary School developed the Cyrillic alphabet, and it was famed for the Golden or Round Church and painted ceramic tiles. It was captured by the Byzantine emperor John Tzimiskes in 971.
